SWAT Lock-In 2008

Atoka/Coal SWAT hosted a Lock-In for the SWAT youth from Atoka/Coal counties on May 16, 2008. It was held at the Atoka Community Center. Choctaw Nation provided Pizza for everyone and there were prizes and snacks for all who attended. Jack Vogle from McAlester spoke to the kids about the dangers of Tobacco Use, he has paid the ultimate price by losing his voice box due to smoking for so many years. He did a great job and along with his wife Fredonia they travel all over doing these presentations to educate the youth on the importance of not strating a deadly habit!! There were about 35 kids in attendance and several teen leaders and adults were there to help out. Thanks to Phyillis Bates at the City Hall for helping us and allowing us to use the facility and to all who were there as chaperones. The kids learned a lot and had a great time. It was a success in bringing together Atoka/Coal kids in being advocates and teammates in the fight against tobacco!!!!!

SE SWAT Regional Event
Nikki Robinson and Amber Gammon along with Harmony SWAT youth attended the SE Region Event at Hugo Oklahoma on Saturday April 5, 2008. The youth were there to hear a guest speaker as well as participate in a demonstration to expose the lies and deceptions of Big Tobacco. The overall theme was 16 a Day!! which is how many Oklahoman's die daily from a tobacco related illness. The youth had a great day and were given some great tools on things they could do in their local communitites to promote tobacco control issues.
SWAT Training

A training for area SWAT youth was conducted on January 26, 2008. Nikki Powell, SWAT Coordinator along with the SE Regional Coordinator Dawn Edwards provided some training topics to the youth to better educate them on how the tobacco industry markets its products to youth.  Amber Gammon, CX Coordinator did a presentation on Youth Activism and how to work as a team. Nikki Powell did one on marketing tactics and Dawn talk about tobacco industry documents.  Attendance was low but the kids learned a lot about how to recognize the lies and deceptions of the tobacco industry. It was decided that maybe a Lock-In type event might work better so their are plans for having one sometime in March.

Cottonwood SWAT forms new team

Cottonwood SWAT is working hard on getting their new team started for this year. Nikki Powell, SWAT Coordinator did a presentation to over 70 kids about the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry. Nikki is also scheduled to talk to the Cottonwood school board in February about adopting a 24/7 tobacco free policy. We are glad to have Cottonwood on board with SWAT and look foward to all the great work they will do in their school.
